Netflix's documentary The Family is leaving viewers 'too horrified to sleep'

Netflix's latest documentary release, The Family, has left viewers branding the series as 'mindblowing essential viewing.'

The five-part documentary, which was released on August 9, is based on the investigative novels by American journalist Jeff Sharlet.

Starring James Cromwell, David Rysdahl, Ben Rosenfield, Netflix 's official blurb describes the show as: "An enigmatic conservative Christian group known as the Family wields enormous influence in Washington, D.C., in pursuit of its global ambitions."

Although it's only been available to watch for less than a week, viewers have already taken to social media to discuss their reaction to the documentary, which is somewhat controversial.

One Twitter user labelled it as "both fascinating and insanely creepy" while one user said they're now "too horrified to sleep".

They said: "Decided to try to watch The Family on Netflix until I fall asleep. A few minutes in and I am already too horrified to sleep."

Others nodded to Netflix's efforts of "mind blowing" documentaries.

If you're tempted to watch the documentary and see for yourself what all the fuss is about, you can stream it on Netflix now if you have an account.

In the meantime, here's the official trailer for a sneak peak:
