Bob Ross: Happy Accidents, Betrayal & Greed is the new Netflix documentary set to explore the dark side of the cult painter’s legacy.

A Netflix summary reads: “Bob Ross brought joy to millions as the world’s most famous art instructor. But a battle for his business empire cast a shadow over his happy trees.”

Directed by Joshua Rofé, the upcoming film promises to bring viewers the “shockingly untold story” behind the iconic curly hair, soothing voice and nostalgic paintings of the prolific landscape artist and host of The Joy of Painting.

Bob Ross: Happy Accidents, Betrayal & Greed will be available to stream on Netflix from Wednesday, August 25.

What is Bob Ross: Happy Accidents, Betrayal & Greed about?

Netflix released a mysterious 20-second clip for the upcoming film featuring a photograph of the painter alongside text reading: “We want to show you the trailer for Bob Ross: Happy Accidents, Betrayal & Greed. But we can’t.”

A voice then says: “I’ve been wanting to get this story out for all these years.”

The documentary will examine the painter’s business empire, and “a sinister tale surrounding his name and the empire that was built on it being hijacked by once trusted partners, whose slow betrayal of him continued beyond his death in 1995.”

Who was Bob Ross and how did he die?

American artist Bob Ross was known for his calming demeanour and phrases like “there’s no mistakes, only happy accidents” and “the joy of painting is the friends you make along the way”.

The Joy of Painting host had a keen appreciation for nature and would always encourage others to embrace their creative side and believe in themselves, all while becoming a bushy-haired cultural phenomenon in the process.

Bob Ross died of lymphoma aged 52 in 1995 but has been enduringly popular in the decades since thanks to the availability of the Joy of Painting on streaming platforms like YouTube.
