Daisy Coleman, one of the stars of Netflix documentary Audrie & Daisy, has died aged 23.
Her mum Melinda has confirmed that she took her own life on Tuesday night.
Daisy’s body was discovered when Melinda called the police to do a welfare check.
A devastated Melinda has since paid tribute to her daughter, calling her “my best friend” adding that she wishes that she could have “taken the pain from her”.
Melinda told TMZ : "She was my best friend and amazing daughter. I think she had to make it seem like I could live without her. I can’t. I wish I could have taken the pain from her.”
In January 2012, Daisy, then 14, was allegedly raped at a house in Missouri, US.
No one has been held responsible for what happened to her.
The Netflix documentary, which was released in 2016, speaks to Daisy and family members as they attempt to deal with what happened, and the shocking reaction from their hostile community.
Melinda added: “She never recovered from what those boys did to her and it’s just not fair. My baby girl is gone.”
The film also followed the sexual assault case of Audrie Pott in September 2012.
Audrie tragically died by suicide 10 days after her ordeal.
In the programme, Daisy can be seen attempting to put the pieces of her life back together and she co-founds SafeBAE, an organisation with the aim of ending sexual assault among middle and high school students and helping survivors.
The organisation says it is devastated by her death and has "suffered an irreplaceable loss."
