Netflix’s #1 Most Watched Show This Week Somehow Wasn’t ‘Cheer’ Or ‘Archive 81’

Cheer Season 2 Netflix

Not sure I’ve ever seen this before, but Netflix’s has issued a new breakdown of its top 10 shows of last week, and a series that never actually made it to #1 in the US is in the #1 position there, with newcomer leaders further down the list.

The show in question is none other than Stay Close, another Harlan Coben-based limited series, this time about a woman with a mysterious past. Netflix has done a few of these before, but this one seems to be the most popular.

Here’s the top 10 list, which has Stay Close in the lead, and #1 from a few days ago, Cheer, and #1 from right now, Archive 81, much lower. But they will likely rise as they came out midway through the week.

  1. Stay Close – 54.7 million hours viewed
  2. Cobra Kai season 4 – 41.2 million hours viewed
  3. The Witcher season 2 – 34.3 million hours viewed
  4. Emily in Paris season 2 – 30 million hours viewed
  5. Cheer season 2 – 29 million hours viewed
  6. Manifest season 1 – 28.1 million hours viewed
  7. Archive 81 season 1 – 22.2 million hours viewed
  8. The Witcher season 1 – 18.5 million hours viewed
  9. Manifest season 2 – 14.8 million hours viewed
  10. Cobra Kai season 3 – 13.9 million hours viewed.

So, what happened here? Cheer and Archive 81 came out later in the week, plus Stay Close may be doing better overseas than in the US, where it has been #2 for a long while. Harlen Coben has had many Netflix productions before, The Innocent, Safe, The Woods, but Stay Close appears to be hitting a level of success unlike many of the others with these kinds of numbers. The show has a 91% critic score, but a pretty low 57% audience score, indicating many may not have liked how the series panned out.

I would expect to see Cheer and Archive 81 surge next week, and I am expecting a renewal for season 2 announcement for Archive 81 any day here now, as that was a surprise hit that has done extremely well, given its lack of promotion or any big stars attached to it. This week brought the arrival of Too Hot to Handle season 2, which has already taken the #2 spot in the US, and seems like it could claim #1 away from Archive 81 in short order here.
