Netflix removes LGBTQ tag on Jeffrey Dahmer series following heated backlash

Netflix has been forced to remove the LGBTQ tag following heated backlash from some horrified viewers.

Netflix's latest blockbuster true crime series has left viewers feeling repulsed and sickened after viewing the 10-part show, which dramatises the life of serial cannibal and murderer Jeffrey Dahmer.

Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story (2022) dropped on the platform September 20 and has already caused a stir among true crime fans, with many saying they feel "sick" after learning about the depths of the Milwaukee Cannibal's crimes.

But viewers were left in further disgust after noticing the dramatisaition of his crimes had been categorised under Netflix ’s LGBTQ raised a lot of eyebrows.

Dahmer was arrested in 1991 and sentenced to 16 life terms for the murder and dismemberment of 17 men and boys between 1978 and 1991, many of whom he committed necrophiliac acts on and consumed. He was beaten to death by an inmate in his cell in 1993.

After realising the category that the new show had been put in, viewers took to social media to voice their disgust.

One person wrote on TikTok: "This is not the representation we're looking for."

Another social media user said she was 'livid' and 'flabbergasted' about the tag, after noticing the show was tagged as both 'LGBTQ' and 'Horror'.

Highlighting the LGBTQ tag, she said it “associates us with a literal serial unaliver, cannibal, amongst other things I'm not sure I can say on this app”.

She added: "Jeffrey Dahmer is not the queer representation that we want, asked for, need - nothing."

As for the horror tag, she said: "I feel like horror implies a certain level of fiction and whimsy that is entirely non-existent and inappropriate for this situation."

Furious viewers also took to Twitter to express their dismay.

"If I need to stay in my lane absolutely tell me but anyone else think it’s pretty gross of Netflix to list Dahmer under LGBTQ, especially when the True Crime tag would have worked?" one wrote.

Another wrote: "No way they put an LGBTQ tag on the new Dahmer series like PLEASE."

A third quipped: "Guys my favourite LGBTQ series on Netflix is: Rupaul’s Drag Race, Dahmer, and Queer Eye."

Netflix has since removed the show from the category. Mirror Online has approached Netflix for comment.

The true crime series was put together by horror auteur Ryan Murphy, who created the massively popular American Horror Story, who did not shy away from some of the most chilling parts of Dahmer's sickening crimes.

This includes scenes where the Milwaukee Cannibal feeds a woman a sandwich filled with human flesh, as well as depicting his method of luring victims, knocking them unconscious, and committing heinous acts on them.

Netflix has previous said that the show aims to shine "a spotlight on the as-yet untold stories of Dahmer’s victims, the people who tried to stop him, and the systemic failures that enabled him to continue his murderous spree for over a decade."

But this has not stopped some viewers, unaware of the gory details of the Dahmer case, from being repulsed by what they saw.

Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story (2022) is available to stream now on Netflix.
