Netflix releases trailer for Jim Parsons' starry gay drama The Boys in the Band

The trailer has been released for Netflix's starry gay drama The Boys in the Band starring Jim Parsons.

The Big Bang Theory star joins the likes of Matt Bomer, Zachary Quinto, and Andrew Rannells in the latest adaptation of Mart Crowley's seminal 1968 play.

Also appearing in the film are Desperate Housewives' Charlie Carver, theatre star Robin de Jesus, Brian Hutchinson, Tuc Watkins, and Michael Benjamin Washington.

The film reunites the 2018 Broadway revival's cast of male actors, all of whom are openly gay actors in real life.

The official synopsis reads: "A group of gay men gather for a birthday party in 1968 New York City, only to find the drinks and laughs interrupted when a visitor from the host’s past turns the evening upside down."

The Boys in the Band was previously adapted into a 1970 film starring Kenneth Nelson and Leonard Frey which is often cited as a seminal film in queer cinema and also is notable for being the first mainstream American film to use the swear word 'c**t'.

The new film is produced by Ryan Murphy as part of his $300 million deal with Netflix which has already seen him produce The Politician and Ratched.

Murphy has previously worked with much of the cast in other projects, working with Parsons recently in Netflix limited series Hollywood.

The film is also directed by Joe Mantello who previously directed Hollywood and the HIV drama mini-series based on the seminal play Angles in America.

Announcing the film on his Instagram in April last year, Ryan Murphy posted: "Last summer, THE BOYS IN THE BAND were on Broadway, breaking house records at The Booth. THIS summer, The Boys In the Band will be filming a Netflix movie event.

Back Row: Robin De Jesus, Michael Benjamin Washington, Matt Bomer, Jim Parsons, Zachary Quinto, Charlie Carver, Tuc Watkins, Andrew Rannells, Brian Hutchison Front: Joe Mantello, Mart Crowley (Brian Bowen Smith/NETFLIX)

"The incomparable Joe Mantello, who directed the Broadway revival, will direct the film adaptation.

"The Broadway cast of BOYS was so important to me, and as equally groundbreaking as Mart Crowley's seminal work.

"Everyone in the cast was out and proud...and feeling so blessed to mark the 50th anniversary of Mart's landmark play."

The Boys in the Band is released on September 30, 2020.
