Netflix is calling time on one of its former biggest shows: The Night Agent will be laid to rest by the streamer following season four, which is currently in production.
Gabriel Basso stars in the show as Peter Sutherland, a low-level FBI agent who becomes embroiled in an international conspiracy involving a Russian agent and the highest levels of US government.
When it was first released in 2023, The Night Agent – based on the Matthew Quirk novel of the same name – became the most-watched show on Netflix globally in the first half of the year, racking up 812 million hours of viewed time for its 10 episodes.
Seasons two and three followed in 2025 and 2026, respectively, and delivered solid ratings despite failing to reach the figures of its first season. However, it is commonly believed that the show’s quality improved as it went on.
Season four has been devised as the finale, meaning viewers will get a conclusion to the story – and creator Shawn Ryan (The Shield) is happy about the show’s fate.
“Ever since the initial success of The Night Agent, I’ve been obsessed with eventually delivering a proper and thrilling conclusion to the show and to Peter Sutherland’s journey,” he said.
“I’m so grateful to Netflix and Sony Pictures Television for partnering with me on The Night Agent and for giving us the space to deliver a definitive final season to our worldwide legion of fans.
He continued: “We are hard at work to complete our story and to make our final season one our fans will never forget.”
New cast members for the fourth and final season include Titus Welliver (Bosch), Trevante Rhodes (Moonlight) and Sinners actor Li Jun Li.

Ryan previously told Deadline about his plans for the show: “The initial pitch for this show that we sold to Netflix was that each season would tell its own, mostly self-enclosed, a beginning, middle and end story, and any future seasons would include a few but not most of the characters that we saw in the previous season.
“That was the original plan; I think it’s still a pretty solid plan. To me, it was important. I don’t want to tell this specific story over five seasons, I want to tell this specific story in one season and give some satisfaction to the audience that they see how things turn out.”
