Netflix Is Giving 13 Going On 30 A Revamp With Jennifer Garner And Damn, I Feel Old

Reboot culture has finally circled back to one of the cosiest rom‑coms of our collective adolescence, and boyfriend I’m nervous. 13 Going on 30 is officially being reimagined at Netflix, which means our sacred comfort watch is headed back under the spotlight whether we’re ready or not.

So, in the interest of managing expectations and not having a full breakdown over a rom‑com, here’s everything we know about the new reboot so far.

Who is making the 13 Going on 30 reboot?

Netflix is the streamer behind the new 13 Going on 30 movie, which is being developed as a fresh take on the 2004 film rather than a direct sequel.

Jennifer Garner, our original Jenna Rink, is returning as an executive producer, alongside a team that includes Hannah Marks, Donna Roth, Susan Arnold, Scott Hemming, Alyssa Altman, Joe Roth and Jeff Kirschenbaum.

Brett Haley, who directed Netflix’s People We Meet on Vacation, is set to direct. In a statement, he called 13 Going on 30 “one of those rare, perfect films. Funny, emotional, deeply human, with unforgettable performances from Jennifer Garner, Mark Ruffalo, and Judy Greer”, adding that “stepping into this reimagining comes with tremendous responsibility”.

What will the 13 Going on 30 reboot be about?

Right now, plot details are under wraps, which is mildly stressful for anyone who grew up quoting “thirty, flirty and thriving” at sleepovers.

In the original, 13‑year‑old Jenna Rink makes a desperate birthday wish and wakes up in her 30‑year‑old body as a New York magazine editor, trying to figure out how her life turned out and what happened to her childhood best friend, Matty.

Haley has described the new film as a “reimagining”, hinting that this won’t just be the same story with updated phones and different lip gloss.

He also said that Jennifer Garner being on board as an executive producer “after playing such a big part of what made the original special, is especially meaningful”, which I’m hoping means they aren’t going to mess it up.

Who is in the 13 Going on 30 reboot?

Emily Bader, who recently starred in Netflix’s adaptation of Emily Henry’s People We Meet on Vacation, will headline the reboot. Logan Lerman has been cast opposite her as the male lead and I have been waiting for these two genetically blessed people to be in a movie together, so for that I am pleased!

Haley said he “couldn’t be more excited to reunite with Emily Bader after People We Meet on Vacation” and called Bader and the “amazingly talented Logan Lerman” a “magical pairing” he feels “incredibly lucky to be trusted with”.

Reactions so far have been all over the place. “This could be amazing or… risky. But with Brett Haley directing? Fingers crossed it captures that feel-good energy,” said one fan.

Another cut right to the point: “Okay but are there no original ideas anymore?”

When will the 13 Going on 30 reboot come out?

At this stage, there’s no confirmed release date for the new 13 Going on 30, and no publicly announced production start date either. But at least we have the original to keep us company while we wait!
