Netflix Ireland tease fans with big news about Top Boy's new season

With features like Bridgerton, The Midnight Sky, The Prom, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, and The Ripper being released on Netflix this December, it's set to be a very happy few weeks as the festive season kicks in.

However, the online streaming giant has an early Christmas present for fans of Top Boy because they've announced that the new season is currently filming.

In a video that was posted to the official Netflix UK & Ireland Twitter account, stars Ashley Walters and Kano announced that the second season of Netflix’s Top Boy has started filming, having been delayed by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

After originally airing on Channel 4 for two seasons in 2011 and 2013, the drama found a global audience when it moved to the online streaming giant in 2019.

In the video, Walters said: "Yo people, what you saying? It's your boy Ashley Walters, I'm not gonna stay here and talk for long, I don't need to. You know what time it is, you can see the mask, so we're obviously shooting Top Boy. You asked for it, we gave it to you."

Before the impact of COVID, Top Boy had been scheduled to film in 2020, but it was one of many TV shows that had to halt production due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Top Boy’s original episodes were acquired by Netflix before the last series debuted, and given the subtitle Top Boy: Summerhouse, to separate them from the Netflix original run.

The crime drama series primarily revolves around the exploits of Dushane (Ashley Walters), who finds himself coming under threat from multiple enemies.

Without giving too much away, the most recent season finished on one hell of a cliffhanger, so fans will be eager to see what's in store.

In an interview with Metro last year, showrunner Ronan Bennett said: ‘Sometimes you write something for screen and it just doesn’t come out as well as you’d hoped even though all the individual parts are good, but somehow when they’re all together they just don’t gel.’

He added: ‘This is different. I think the new season is brilliant, I really do. We don’t want to sit on our laurels.’
