It’s time to break out the tissue boxes, because Netflix has finally shared the trailer for Building The Band, and it includes scenes of late One Direction member Liam Payne. Ugh, my Directioner heart is still in mourning.
If Love Is Blind and The Glee Project had a superstar child, it would be Building The Band. The brand spanking new series, from Netflix, follows 50 musos who are tasked with forming six bands without ever seeing each other.
Alongside the wickedly talented contestants, Building The Band also features a bunch of celebrities who will serve as judges and mentors.
This includes Nicole Scherzinger of The Pussycat Dolls, Kelly Rowland of Destiny’s Child and late One Direction member Liam Payne, with Backstreet Boys’ AJ Mclean serving as a host.
Per The Sun, Building The Band was filmed two months before Liam Payne passed away after falling from his Casa Sur Hotel balcony in Buenos Aires in October 2024.
The publication also reports that Liam Payne’s family gave permission for Netflix to move forward with the music competition show and were reportedly given the “final sign-off” on how he was portrayed.

In the trailer, Payne is seen giving advice to one of the six bands, urging them to work on their vocal skills and their connection as a group.
“We’ve got a lot of work to do vocally. I need to feel that connection between you guys,” Payne shared.
In another scene, Payne explained how One Direction wasn’t “put together” normally.

Shortly after the trailer was made public, Directioners took to the comments with heartfelt messages, with many expressing how much they miss the “One Thing” singer.
“This is going to be a hard, but necessary watch. We will get to see even more up close what a natural talent you were and how much charisma you had. We only needed more time. You are missed terribly Liam,” one person wrote.
“We miss you Liam. We lost such a bright light in this world in October. I’m so grateful we have this last opportunity to see that light one last time,” another penned.
“Oh Liam. I’ll watch this, but I’ll be missing you like crazy. Blows my mind he did this with Nicole. The person most responsible for getting 1D together,” wrote a third.
It’s quite beautiful to see Payne rock out on the screen one last time. Especially with something that is his niche!!!
Super stoked to see what magic he created during his time on Building The Band.
Building The Band kicks off July 9 on Netflix.
