Netflix has confirmed it's adding games to its subscription

Netflix has become a household name for movie streaming since it moved from home-delivered movies to online services in the mid-2000s.

Netflix - which is already a household streaming platform with hundreds of millions of subscribers across the world - is looking to expand into gaming.

The company has now confirmed in a letter to shareholders that they plan to add games to the subscription service at no extra cost.

“Initially, we’ll be primarily focused on games for mobile devices. We’re excited as ever about our movies and TV series offering and we expect a long runway of increasing investment and growth across all of our existing content categories," Netflix's letter said.

"But since we are nearly a decade into our push into original programming, we think the time is right to learn more about how our members value games."

While the letter clearly outlines a definitive plan to add mobile games to the streaming service, it doesn't confirm a timeframe of what games will be added or when they'll be added.

Netflix's net gain of 5.5 million subscribers through the first six months of 2021 is the weakest first-half performance in nearly a decade since 2013.

Video game executive veteran, Mike Verdu, has been hired by Netflix to aid them in this venture of expanding the company's entertainment reach.

Verdu has previously worked with some large companies such as Electronic Arts, Facebook, Kabam, and Atari.

His time at Facebook saw him responsible for augmented reality and virtual reality as the vice president in charge of such content.

A previous shareholder letter in 2019 detailed how Netflix has got massive battle royale game Fortnite in its sights as a potential competitor as they make the move into the videogame industry.
