Netflix fans demand trigger warning for disturbing new horror series

New horror series Ju-On: Origins has been met with calls for trigger warnings since it was released on Netflix.

The drama is a prequel to the popular franchise around The Grudge and contains a number of graphic scenes, including depictions of rape, child abuse, and explicit violence.

The plot explores the origins of the terrifying haunted house that lies at the centre of the Grudge franchise.

The series is rated with an 18 certificate and a small warning appears momentarily, noting the presence of "sexual violence, sexual threat and injury detail" in the show.

Naturally, viewers of the violent new series were quick to share their feelings of it on social media.

One viewer of the series wrote on Twitter : "I'm am enjoying Ju-on Origins so far but let me be clear - this is a lot. Trigger warnings for rape in particular very early on.

"Its not a series you can really binge. Not to me anyways. I'm on episode 3 now."

A different Netflix user commented: "Sooooo major trigger warning for that Ju-On: Origins Netflix show there is a rape in the first episode, ALOT of child abuse and domestic violence/abuse.

"No suicide stuff yet but will keep you all posted."

Meanwhile, a different Ju-On: Origins binger noted: "Ju-On: Origins. Pilot. Pt 1-I was all for a Ju-on series, but this is more of a brutal take than the movies and I don’t appreciate it.

"Trigger warning for child abuse, rape, bullying and murdering of children. If those things don’t bother you, watch it."

Elsewhere, a different viewer of the new series tweeted: "Don’t watch “The Orgins of Ju-On” on @netflix the first episode is major triggering for a lot of people. In the first episode there was rape & killing of a child. I feel like Netflix should put a trigger warning sticker . Because this wasn’t scary it was highly disturbing."

Okay, we may be a little frightened by this show! (Youtube)

Finally, one viewer of the show concluded: "Started watching the Ju-On tv series and holy f**k it's just a brutal series of trauma-based triggers and not even fun or scary.

"Would not recommend even if you're a huge j-horror or Ju-On fan."

Well, we may have to brave it and see for ourselves!

Ju-On: Origins is available now on Netflix.
