Netflix Expands Anime Selection With Studio Ghibli's Latest Masterpiece.

The Boy and the Heron marks Miyazaki's return to filmmaking after a decade.

Hayao Miyazaki's highly anticipated film, The Boy and the Heron, is set to make its debut on Netflix in regions beyond the US and Japan, expanding the platform's anime selection. This move comes as part of an extended deal with the renowned Studio Ghibli, founded by Miyazaki, Isao Takahata, and Toshio Suzuki.

The Boy and the Heron, also known as Kimitachi wa Dou Ikiru Ka, has captivated audiences with its enchanting storytelling and stunning animation. Miyazaki's return to filmmaking after a decade, the film delves into his childhood memories and has garnered widespread acclaim, including winning the 2024 Best Animated Feature Oscar.

The film has not only been a critical success but also a commercial hit, grossing over $85 million at the Japanese box office and dominating the North American box office with a record-breaking $12.8 million on its opening weekend.

Netflix's acquisition of The Boy and the Heron is part of a larger agreement that includes 22 additional Studio Ghibli films, such as the beloved Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, and My Neighbor Totoro. These films will be available for streaming in various regions with subtitles in 28 languages and dubbing in up to 20 languages.

The collaboration between Netflix and Studio Ghibli underscores the enduring appeal of Miyazaki's storytelling and the studio's commitment to producing exceptional animated films. This partnership allows fans worldwide to easily access a treasure trove of films that have charmed audiences for years.

In the United States, Max has secured the streaming rights for The Boy and the Heron and will be the exclusive platform for streaming Studio Ghibli's films. This agreement is part of a multiyear extension between GKIDS, the North American distributor for Studio Ghibli, and Max, ensuring that the studio's library remains on the Warner Bros. Discovery platform.

Toshio Suzuki, president of Studio Ghibli, revealed the surprising return of Miyazaki from retirement to create The Boy and the Heron. Despite announcing his retirement in 2013, Miyazaki expressed his desire to make another film in 2016, leading to the production of this latest masterpiece.

As Netflix prepares to announce the premiere date for The Boy and the Heron later this year, fans are eagerly anticipating Miyazaki's latest creation. With an expanded Studio Ghibli collection, Netflix continues to solidify its position as a premier destination for anime enthusiasts and film lovers.
