The Netflix documentary series was released on the streaming giant today and will shed a light on some thoroughly damaging miscarriages of justice.

The show follows the nonprofit organization the Innocence Project and organisations within the Innocence Network have investigated and worked tirelessly to overturn these wrongful convictions.

Each of the nine episodes in the series is composed of three compelling parts - The Evidence, The Witness and The Prosecution.

The episodes follow the convictions of Alfred Dewayne Brown, Chester Hollman III, Thomas Haynesworth, Franky Carrillo, Kenneth Wyniemko, Levon Brooks, Keith Harward.and Kennedy Brewer.

One of the cases under examination is Levon Brooks, who is serving a life sentence for the sexual assault and murder of a three-year-old girl.

Despite Brooks having a watertight alibi, he was convicted on the evidence of teeth marks on the girl's corpse, but soon a similar attack with similar such evidence took place after in the same town.

Meanwhile, Alfred Dewayne Brown was sentenced to death after the death of two men in an armed robbery, while Thomas Haynesworth was another victim of a miscarriage of justice when he was convicted for robbery, abduction, and rape.

Ultimately the show looks to uncover the damaging flaws in the American criminal justice system and the impact on the victims, families, and trust that justice will indeed be done.

Peter Neufeld and Barry Scheck, co-founders of The Innocent Project, said in a statement on the show: "We hope these stories motivate people to take action.

"There are tried and tested reforms that will improve the system to make it more fair and just.

"Countless innocent people endure unspeakable suffering in maximum security prisons and death row for crimes they didn't commit."

They concluded: "These miscarriages of justice extend a circle of pain and trauma that embraces families, communities, and even victims of crime. We must do better."

This sounds like it could be a real tear-jerker!

The Innocence Files is out now on Netflix.
