Netflix confirms Ricky Gervais's After Life will return for a third series

Netflix has confirmed that Ricky Gervais's popular dark comedy After Life will return for a third series.

The second series of the heartbreaking show was released on the streaming service last month and quickly became one of the most-viewed programmes in the UK.

Gervais, who both wrote and starred in the series, has signed a new multi-year deal with Netflix that will see After Life return for a third round.

Posting on Twitter last night, he wrote: "Because so many of you watched #AfterLife2 so quickly and made it Number 1 again, the nice people at @Netflix have suggested that I get off my fat arse and do another season. This is all your fault."

He later hosted a live stream on Twitter answering questions from fans.

Netflix also confirmed the news on their own feed, and posted a video montage of the most heart-breaking moments from the most recent series.

Gervais created The Office almost 20 years ago, and is well-known for his roasting of celebrities whenever he hosts the Golden Globes awards.

His critcially-acclaimed After Life follows widowed journalist Tony as he navigates a new world without his wife Lisa (Kerry Godliman).

The cast includes comedians Roisin Conaty (as Roxy the sex worker) and Joe Wilkinson as Pat the Postman.

Ricky said in a statement: "I was planning to retire soon and just wander around the house drunk until I die, but I’ve grown a bit tired of doing that during the lockdown, and also Netflix made me an offer I couldn’t refuse."

You can watch the first two seasons on Netflix.
