Pablo Escobar drama Narcos will continue beyond the death of the drug kingpin.
Netflix has recommissioned a third and fourth season of the hit drug cartel drama, moving beyond its roots following the rise and fall of Escobar’s cartel.
The first season marked Escobar’s ruthless rise and the dogged pursuit to catch him by US DEA agents Steve Murphy and Javier Peña. The second season, available on Netflix from last Friday, shows the killing of the Colombian drug lord as his power wanes and the rival Cali cartel moves to take his place.
Netflix has not revealed how many episodes each of the next two series will be, but the third instalment will be made available in 2017.
Ahead of the premiere of season two, showrunner Eric Newman confirmed that it would see the death of Escobar, played by Brazilian Wagner Moura.
Newman, who executive produces the show with José Padilha, said that the drama was never just about the Medellín cartel.
“Narcos is about cocaine and cocaine continues beyond Escobar,” he told the Hollywood Reporter. “I’ll go as long as they’ll let me go. There’s a reason why we call this show Narcos and not Pablo Escobar. It’s very much about the trade.”
