Netflix banks £51k tax rebate after funnelling £700m from subscribers offshore

Netflix banked a £51,000 tax rebate last year while an estimated £700million from subscribers was funnelled offshore.

Accounts show the US streaming giant, behind hits including The Crown and Black Mirror , benefitted from breaks for making shows here.

And they helped the firm wipe out its Corporation Tax bill, so that its UK arm – where profits nearly doubled to £2million – received an overall tax credit of £51,000 for 2018.

Submissions at Companies House say: “The company used a credit stemming from these Netflix UK production activities against its recorded profit.”

Netflix is behind the hugely popular The Crown series (Netflix)

But the UK entity is only tasked with marketing and “other support services” for Netflix’s Netherlands-based European business – where subscribers’ cash is sent.

And some 10 million UK customers paid an estimated £700million last year.

Netflix has said it is investing more than £400million in the UK this year, creating 20,000 jobs.
