Netflix asks Prince Harry and Meghan for 'more great ideas to earn £40million fee'

Netflix has asked Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle to come up with "more great ideas" if they want to pick up £40 million in outstanding fees, it has been reported.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex's no-holds-barred Harry & Meghan TV series went down a storm earlier this year, becoming the streaming giant's most-watched documentary.

But the pair are believed to have only been paid 50 per cent of their reported £81 million contract so far.

A source said that Netflix was happy with the viewing figures for the six-part season and are now eager for more, confident in the knowledge that they have a good format for success.

It's claimed, however, that if a follow-up can't be agreed Harry and Meghan will remain out of pocket.

Discussing the Netflix arrangement, the source told the Sun: "There’s no question of a headline-grabbing, public parting of the way.

"Netflix was pleased to sign Harry and Meghan and is looking for some great ideas going forward.

"But the remainder of the deal relies on them producing those good ideas. The deal’s continually under review which is normal for ones of this magnitude."

It comes after the pair's Archewell company mutually ended an £18million deal with Spotify earlier this year after Meghan produced just 13 broadcasts over a two-and-a half period.

The couple will be hoping their Netflix arrangement doesn't go the same way as Meghan's contract with Spotify (pixel8000)

The mega-bucks multi-year golden handcuffs agreement was one of the largest signed in history for a newly formed podcast show.

At the time Industry sources said the deal to bring Meghan and Harry on board was "a perfect fit" with the business model to grow Spotify's global audience of 320 million monthly active users.

However, Spotify chief executive Daniel Ek recently told the BBC that the company had been "overpaying and overinvesting".

He said: "We're going to be very diligent in how we invest in future content deals. And the ones that aren't performing, obviously, we won't renew."
