Netflix announces smash hit period drama Bridgerton is to return for second season

Hit period drama Bridgerton will return for a second season, Netflix has announced.

A tweet from the official Netflix Twitter account for UK and Ireland this afternoon confirmed: "DEAREST READERS, BREAKING NEWS... Bridgerton *will* return for a second season!"

A second tweet suggested the new episodes would focus on actor Jonathan Bailey’s character, Anthony Bridgerton.

It said: “And according to Lady Whistledown, ‘Lord Anthony Bridgerton intends to dominate the social season’.”

Fans of the raunchy period drama have been binge-watching the series since it dropped on the streaming platform on Christmas Day.

A hit with millions of viewers, people have been left wondering whether they will get to see more after season one closed with the birth of Daphne and the Duke's baby.

Hundreds of Twitter-uses have replied to the tweet so far expressing their excitement.

One shared: "The most splendid news" while another posted: "Excellent, need more of the Duke in my life".

Others replied asking when the next season would launch, however no air date has been confirmed.

The eight-part sexually-charged period drama follows the ‘coming out’ season of high society Regency London.

While it’s based on the bestselling romance novels by Julia Quinn, creator Chris Van Dusen has said the binge-worthy show has a distinct ‘swagger’ and ‘style’.

The series has been commended for its diversity in the cast, with Regé-Jean Page taking the lead role as the Duke of Hastings.

Coronation Street's Sally Dynevor's daughter, Phoebe Dynevor, 25, takes the lead female role as debutante Daphne Bridgerton.

You can watch season one of Bridgerton on Netflix now.
