Netflix and Disney+ subscriptions could cost more under proposed social media law

New social media laws could see subscriptions to services such as Netflix and Disney+ look like facing a levy which could increase the cost for subscribers.

Under the legislation, it's recommended that a minimum age requirement be established for setting up a social media account along with a levy on streaming services such as Netflix and Disney+.

This price increase could be used to fund independent Irish productions.

Currently, Netflix has three separate tiers for subscribing to the service.

The basic subscription allows you to watch Netflix content on one screen and costs €7.99 per month.

The standard package costs €12.99 but allows you to stream on two devices simultaneously.

The premium package, which includes 4K content, will set you back €17.99 per month.

Meanwhile, Disney+ has just one subscription price of €8.99 which allows you to stream on 4 devices at the same time.

Netflix has previously upped the price for the standard and premium subscriptions in March 2021 by €1 for standard and €2 for premium.

According to Netflix: "This update will allow us to deliver even more value for your membership – with stories that lift you up, move you or simply make your day a bit better."
