Netflix addresses ‘second screen viewing’ criticism

  • Matt Damon accused Netflix of purposefully simplifying plots for viewers who might be watching while scrolling on their phones, a claim he made in January while promoting a Netflix thriller.
  • Netflix film chairman Dan Lin denied these allegations, stating there is “no such principle” and that the company focuses on making great movies without repeating plot points.
  • Netflix chief content officer Bela Bajaria called the suggestion “offensive to creators and filmmakers”, adding that she has even asked showrunners to reduce plot exposition.
  • The discussion around “second screen viewing” gained traction in Hollywood, even inspiring a skit at the Oscars hosted by Conan O’Brien.
  • Actress Jameela Jamil also supported the claim, suggesting that studios routinely issue directives for writers to make plots more explicit so viewers can follow along while distracted.
