The untold story of the “greatest artist God ever created” will be streaming soon.
A documentary series about Kanye West has reportedly been acquired for $30 million by Netflix with an expected launch date for late this year.
While Netflix has yet to confirm the acquisition a source familiar with the project told “Entertainment Tonight” that the figure is inaccurate, which the outlet reported Wednesday.
According to Billboard, the project has been in the works for the better part of the past two 20 years and is the brainchild of filmmakers Clarence “Coodie” Simmons and Chike Ozah.
The duo, professionally known as Coodie & Chike, directed West’s 2003 debut music video “Through the Wire” and “Jesus Walks pt. 3.” The in-demand filmmakers have been friends with the hip hop superstar before his meteoric rise to fame and will frame the docuseries around their decadeslong friendship.
In addition, the show will focus West’s story around his explosive career, his personal and professional highs and lows, his failed 2020 presidential bid and how fame has influenced his celebrity persona.
Though the yet-to-be-titled film will include the tragic loss of his mother, Donda West, it is unknown if the series will highlight West’s marriage and recently announced divorce from Kim Kardashian.
Outside of the footage they’ve captured through the years, Coodie & Chike will also reportedly rely on home videos and other never-before-seen content to tell the brazen billionaire’s story.
The filmmakers’ Creative Control company, which also produced the 2018 Aretha Franklin documentary “Amazing Grace” and the 2020 documentary “John Lewis: Good Trouble,” will helm the docuseries.
As directors, Coodie & Chike won acclaim for their 2012 ESPN 30-for-30 film, “Benji,” about Ben Wilson, a high school basketball player who was tragically killed.
Their Stephon Marbury documentary, “A Kid From Coney Island,” premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2019 and is currently streaming on Netflix.
