Netflix account sharing charges set to be introduced as streaming services cracks down

Netflix subscribers who share their account details could soon face extra charges as the streaming services cracks down on user log ins.

Sharing your Netflix log in with friends or family who don't live in the same house is something many people do and have been able to do at no added cost and with no repercussions.

But that will all change with Netflix set to test charging customers an extra fee to make their account available to others.

While Netflix has never banned anyone for doing so, It is and technically always has been an infringement of the rules to share your log in with the services terms and conditions reading: "The Netflix service and any content accessed through the service are for your personal and non-commercial use only and may not be shared with individuals beyond your household."

According to The Mirror, Netflix said it would soon start testing new features that let subscribers pay to add "sub accounts" for up to two people they do not live with. It is testing the changes in Chile, Costa Rica, and Peru, with the extra accounts costing 30% to 40% of a basic membership.

The rule change comes as Netflix prepares to raise all of its fees on each different level of subscription.

The basic and standard plan will both increase by £1 a month to £6.99 and £10.99 respectively, while the premium tier will go up by £2 to £15.99.

News of Netflix's crackdown on sharing log-ins has not been received well on social media.

Taking to Twitter, one customer fumed: "you can tell how greedy @netflix is that they wanna charge people for sharing accounts. PATHETIC," with another reacting: "Netflix tryna add a sharing free baffles me… like bro nobody even likes you like that anymore."
