Netflix A Noticeable Presence In 58th Baeksang Arts Award Nominations

The 58th Baeksang Arts Awards have announced nominations, based on dramas, shows, and films that aired or were released between April 12, 2021 and March 31, 2022.

One noticeable trend this year is the inclusion of so many TV dramas produced by Netflix NFLX , a relative newcomer to the Korean content market. The number of nominations is significant since Netflix produced Kingdom, its first original Korean content, in 2019.

The best drama nominations were given to D.P. (Netflix), Twenty Five, Twenty One (tvN), Squid Game (Netflix), Red Sleeve (MBC), Political Fever (Waave).

Best actor nominations went to Kim Nam-gil for the SBS crime drama Through The Darkness, Lee Jung-jae for Squid Game, Lee Junho for The Red Sleeve, Im Siwan for Waave’s Tracer and Jung Hae-in for D.P.

Best actress nominations went to Kim Tae-ri for Twenty Five, Twenty One, Kim Hye-soo for the Netflix show Juvenile Justice, Park Eun-bin for the KBS2 drama The King’s Affection, Lee Se-young for The Red Sleeve and Han So-hee for the Netflix drama My Name.

Best supporting actor nominations went to Lee Deok-hwa for The Red Sleeve, Lee Hak-joo for Political Fever, Lee Hyun-wook for tvN’s Mine, Cho Hyun-chul for D.P. and Heo Sung-tae for Squid Game.

Best supporting actress nominations were given to Kang Mal-geum for JTBC’s 39, Kim Shin-rok for the Netflix program Hellbound, Kim Joo-ryung for Squid Game, Ok Ja-yeon for Mine and Jang Hye-jin for The Red Sleeve.

Best new actor nominations went to Goo Kyo-hwan and Shin Seung-ho, both for D.P., Yoo In-soo for the Netflix zombie drama All Of Us Are Dead, Choi Hyun-wook for Twenty Five, Twenty One and Tang Joon-sang for the SBS show Racket Boys.

Best new actress nominations went to Kim Hye-joon for the JTBC show Inspector Koo, Lee Yeon for Juvenile Justice, Lee Yoo-mi and Choi Yi-hyun, both for All Of Us Are Dead, and Jung Ho-yeon for Squid Game. Given the number of best new actor and actress nominations, it’s safe to say Netflix has an eye for new Korean talent.

The best film nominations went to The Miracle, Escape From Mogadishu, Sewing Sisters, Romance Without Love and King Maker.

Best actor nominations went to Kim Yun-seok for Escape From Mogadishu, Sol Kyung-gu and Lee Sun-gyun for King Maker, Jung Woo for Hot Blooded and Choi Min-sik for In Our Prime.

Best actress nominations went to Go Doo-shim for Everglow, Park So-dam for Special Delivery, Lee Hye-young for In Front Of Your Face, Yoona for The Miracle and Jeon Jong-seo for Romance Without Love.

Best supporting actor nominations went to Goo Kyo-hwan and Heo Joon-ho, both for Escape from Mogadishu, Park Yong-woo for Spiritwalker, Sung Yoo-bin for Perhaps Love and Jo Woo-jin for King Maker.

Best supporting actress nominations were given to Kim So-jin and Kim Jae-hwa, both for Escape From Mogadishu, Shim Dal-gi for Snowball, Oh Na-ra for Perhaps Love and Lee Soo-kyung for The Miracle.

Best new actor nominations went to Kim Dong-hwi for In Our Prime, Kim Dae-bum for Hostage: Missing Celebrity, Mu Jin-sung for Perhaps Love, Lee Hong-nae for Hot Blooded and Jung Jae-kwang for Not Out.

Best new actress award nominations went to Gong Seung-yeon for Aloners, Minah for Snowball, Seohyun for Love and Leashes, Lee Yoo-mi for Young Adult Matters and Choi Sung-eun for Ten Months.

The awards will be presented on May 6.
