Netball: Newcastle, Charlestown cancel Saturday's round because of COVID-19 situation

Newcastle Netball Association (NNA) have cancelled Saturday's upcoming round at National Park because of the "evolving COVID-19 situation" in the region.

NNA president Cheryl Hernando confirmed the decision on Friday.

"We have cancelled Saturday's games in recognition of the evolving COVID-19 situation in Newcastle," Hernando told the Newcastle Herald.

"The safety of our players and the community is of our upmost importance."

NNA only returned to the courts last weekend after an already delayed start to the 2020 season.

"This has been a really difficult decision to make just as the season has started, but with the size of our association we have an obligation to keep our players and their families safe and healthy through the next few days and weeks," NNA added in a statement.

"We can hopefully be back playing netball next Saturday."

Charlestown Netball Association (CNA) also took the same course of action.

"This wasn't an easy call to make, but the safety of our players, coaches, umpires and the broader netball community are at the forefront of our thought," CNA released in a statement.

"We have made the decision for the best interest of our players and community."

There have now been three confirmed coronavirus cases in Newcastle from the same family cluster.
