Nestle has started using recyclable paper in its snack bar range

Nestle's snack bar YES! is being wrapped in recyclable paper, the company said.

Experts have found a way to handle the packaging more gently in the high speed packaging line.

The high speed "flow wrap cold seal" packing process has previously only been suitable for use with more durable plastic films and laminates.

The new wrapper was tested to make sure it would keep the bars in good condition during production, transport and storage.

Now the coated paper wrapper, which the company says comes from sustainable sources and is widely recyclable with other paper, will be rolled out on Nestle's YES! fruit and nut based bars from this month.

Stefano Agostini, chief executive for Nestle in the UK and Ireland, said: "YES! represents exactly what more and more people are demanding from manufacturers like Nestle now and for the future.

"Last year we introduced YES! as an entirely new brand using wholesome ingredients and offering a healthier snacking option of tasty fruit and nut bars.

"Now we've turned our attention to the wrapper so that the packaging is sustainable and easy to recycle.

"It's an important step as we work to make all of our packaging recyclable or reusable by 2025."
