Australian captain Tim Paine failed on his return to first-class cricket as Tasmania stumbled to 7-149 at tea in their Sheffield Shield match against Queensland.
Paine (4) was out late in the second session, slashing wildly at the bowling of Xavier Bartlett, the veteran keeper-batsman caught neatly at second slip by fellow Test player Joe Burns.
It was a disappointing return in his first first-class match in seven months.
One of four wickets in the middle session, it handed Queensland full advantage after Tasmania had moved steadily to 3-138 at Adelaide's Gladys Elphick Park.
Ben McDermott (74) had looked on track for the opening century of the season until caught sharply in the covers by Usman Khawaja, also off the bowling of Bartlett (3-49).
Ex-Test batsman Khawaja went one better on the last ball before tea, moving to slips and pouching a brilliant catch on the second attempt after a rank short-ball by spinner Mitch Swepson (1-32).
Earlier, Queensland quick Michael Neser took the opening three wickets - including two in four balls.
Neser (3-21) had been the destroyer, with the wickets of Jordan Silk, lbw for 10, and Charlie Wakim (0), caught at point by Swepson, in quick succession.
When the right-armer had Alex Doolan (29) trapped in front before the first break, Tasmania were teetering at 3-70.
