'Nervous' cats abandoned at Glasgow fire station as charity urges owners to come forward

A Glasgow cat charity is looking to track down the owners of three cats abandoned at Govan fire station.

The trio of 'nervous' but 'not feral' felines were dumped at Govan fire station on July 7. Charity, Cat Concern, were called to the scene and their team have launched an appeal to trace the owners.

Cat Concern chiefs stress that they will not 'judge' or start 'a backlash of hate'. They just 'want to help'.

Suzanne Nelson, who runs the Glasgow-based charity, told Glasgow Live: “We honestly don’t want to judge or start a backlash of hate towards anyone, as we don’t know their situation. We just want to help them.”

Cat Concern operates from cat foster homes based in Glasgow and Lanarkshire, looking to help rescue, neuter and rehome stray or abandoned cats. The charity hopes to track down the original owners, and re-home the animals if they are willing to pass them on.

Suzanne told us this isn’t the first time Govan fire station, on Govan Road, has passed on some abandoned cats.

She added: “In June 2021, a young female cat named Asha was found outside the station. A week later, we were called on a Saturday evening as there were kittens in the fire station and two were hiding inside one of the fire engines.

"The staff were concerned in case there was a call out and they had to drive with cats inside. We set traps overnight, which were monitored by the firefighters and eventually managed to safely trap all three.

"They were nervous, but definitely not feral. They were kept in our care and have now been neutered, microchipped, vaccinated and wormed and happy living in their new homes.”

Suzanne also told us the organisation has been inundated with calls concerning abandoned cats in recent months as well as scammers trying to sell kittens.

She said: “For two years, we had no kittens as people were breeding or selling on social media for up to £500 a kitten. They advertise tabby kittens as Bengals.

"People were paying large deposits for kittens and they turned out to be scammers. A lot of these cats are being dumped now and we’re getting calls weekly for friendly cats with kittens being found in garden sheds.

"Many charities are struggling with space."

Anyone interested in adopting a Cat Concern feline, will be subject to a home check, must prove they can provide a stable homes and can afford vet bills.
