'Nervous but Excited' - Manchester United fans react to Erik ten Hag with cautious optimism

Manchester United have been in the process of searching for their next permanent manager, but it seems they now may have finally settled on their man.

United have not finalised an agreement with Ten Hag, but are confident that they will be able to appoint him as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's successor. Mauricio Pochettino had also been in the running but a combination of a high release clause and his performances at Paris Saint-Germain had ultimately seen him fall behind the Dutchman.

United fans were ecstatic on social media at the news as Ten Hag had been the favourite among much of the fanbase to take over given the work he had done at Ajax this season. The Dutch side had impressed in the group stages of the Champions League before exiting the competition to Benfica in the Round of 16 and they also sit top of the Eredivisie by four points, with a goal difference of 69.

However, while most were happy with the appointment of Ten Hag, some fans wanted to still remain cautious. Ten Hag's football is modern and progressive, allowing for a lot of goals, but it is also precise and the team needs to be constructed to meet his requirements and at Ajax, the structure was in place to facilitate this.

United unfortunately are only at the beginning of putting this structure in place and given the club's track record in the transfer market, the fans are right to have their doubts about whether Ten Hag will get the support and freedom to change the team he needs. The report from The Telegraph stating that United were in the process of appointing a deputy-Director of Football may breed some optimism, however.

This 'cautious optimism' could be seen on Twitter, where many fans voiced that they were happy with the appointment of the 'best choice' in Ten Hag, but now the club needed to make sure everything was in place so he could succeed. You can see this in the replies below:
