Nephew arrested after carrying uncle's corpse into post office to collect his pension

Police have charged a man after a pensioner who was already dead was taken to a post office in an alleged attempt to collect his pension.

Two men were arrested on Wednesday, January 26, after Peadar Doyle, 66, was brought into the post office in the town of Carlow, Ireland, last Friday.

The pair were arrested by officers on suspicion of deception, however one of the men was released without charge.

This morning, the nephew of Doyle, Declan Haughney, appeared before a sitting at Kilkenny District Court charged with deception.

Haughney has been accused of attempting to withdraw the pension of his uncle on two occasions on the same morning.

A file is being sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), the Mirror reports.

A Garda (Irish Police) spokesperson said: “Following the arrest of two men in their 30s yesterday, as part of the ongoing investigation into an incident at a business premises in Carlow town on Friday, January 21, 2022, one of the men has been charged.

“He is scheduled to appear before Carlow District Court this morning, January 27, 2022.

“The second man has been released from custody and a file will be prepared for the DPP.”

On Monday at the funeral of Peadar Doyle, his nephew Declan Haughney was seen carrying his coffin out of the Church of the Holy Family in Askea, Co Carlow, according to Irish Mirror.
