Neo-Nazis will defy Berlin ban

Celebrities including Boris Becker and Bruno Ganz - who played Hitler in the acclaimed film Downfall - will be taking part in a rally today as part of Germany's celebrations of the 60th anniversary of the end of the Second World War, writes Luke Harding in Berlin.

The Oscar-nominated Downfall vividly depicts the last hours in Hitler's Berlin bunker. Thousands of people are expected to converge on the Brandenburg Gate, Berlin's most famous monument, for the rally, under the slogan: 'Day of Democracy'.

The authorities have banned far-right marchers from the Brandenburg Gate and from the Holocaust memorial, which is due to be open on Tuesday. But the neo-Nazis are likely to parade in Alexanderplatz, in the centre of former communist East Berlin, and in Unter Den Linden, Berlin's most famous avenue.

Although large numbers of police will attend, there could be clashes as anti-fascists stage demonstrations.
