Edinson Cavani came to the rescue for Manchester United at Newcastle on Monday night, and his team-mates are in no doubt as to his importance to the side.
The Uruguay international came off the bench with United 1-0 down at St James’ Park to rescue a point after a poor display from the visitors against the Premier League strugglers.
Cavani poked home with 20 minutes to go to spare United’s blushes, and ensure Ralf Rangnick’s unbeaten start as interim manager continued, although the German admitted he wasn’t happy with his side’s latest performance.
His substitutions made a difference though, with Cavani one of a few players able to hold their head high come full time after coming off the bench.
The goal was just the striker’s second of the campaign, with his opportunities having proven much more limited after impressing last season.
Cavani though showed he can still play a part for United, and celebrated his vital contribution by posting pictures of himself celebrating on Instagram after the game.
The post generated plenty of replies, including from team-mate Nemanja Matic, who simply replied: “Class is eternal.”
Cavani’s goal came amid growing speculation over his future at Old Trafford, with the striker being linked with a move away in January.
The 34-year-old has been touted for a return to South America, with his contract at United set to expire in the summer, while Barcelona have also been linked with him.
Having made the difference at Newcastle, Cavani has at least given Rangnick some food for thought over his future, and whether he should get more chances in the New Year.
