Nemanja Matic makes Paul Pogba and Man Utd transfer admission

Nemanja Matic is confident Manchester United team-mate Paul Pogba will remain at Old Trafford this summer, but admitted that "anything is possible".

Pogba, 26, has been heavily linked with a move away from the Red Devils this summer, with the Frenchman believed to be a target for Real Madrid .

Speculation over the midfielder's future recently increased when the midfielder missed the club's final pre-season friendly against AC Milan, which the club won on penalties after a 2-2 draw.

Some reports had suggested he failed to report for the trip to south Wales in an attempt to force a move to Madrid, but United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer insisted that Pogba's absence was down to a back injury.

Although the midfielder has indicated his desire leave the club by saying he wants to find a "new challenge", Solskjaer said he had "no doubts" he will remain at Old Trafford, a sentiment that is echoed by Matic.

"We will see what is going to happen," Matic said of Pogba's situation after the win over Milan.

"He's a Manchester United player and of course we will be happy if he stays.

"He is a great player and very important for the team.

"I don't see that he's going to leave. But in football anything is possible."

The Red Devils enter the new campaign looking to improve on last season's disappointing sixth-placed finish in the Premier League, which resulted in the club failing to qualify for the Champions League.

Following a successful pre-season, which saw United win all six of their matches, the Manchester club start their season at home against Chelsea and Matic believes the club are in food shape for the new campaign.

"We have had a long pre-season, a lot of travel," Matic continued.

"But we have used this time to train hard in every aspect. We worked a lot physically, as well as tactically.

"I think we are (fitter) this year but we have to show that on the pitch.

"We know what the coach wants in every situation of the game and we are trying to transfer his ideas on the pitch.

"I think we are ready to start the Premier League."
