Nemanja Matic makes Manchester United prediction after Colchester win

Nemanja Matic wants Manchester United to iron out their inconsistencies and continue to put away the teams they're expected to beat this season.

United secured a comfortable at Old Trafford in Wednesday night's League Cup tie, as expected, but laboured for long periods against the stubborn League Two side.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men have struggled in many games against mid-table Premier League teams this term - and even in the cup competitions when they've been favourites to win - while ironically thriving against better sides.

But Matic believes United's young players will only get better and more consistent.

"When I'm on the pitch I'll continue to do my job and help the team," he told MUTV after the game.

"We can beat anyone, but as you see this season, we also can lose to anyone, which we have to change. We have to be more consistent in our games but this is normal for a young team without experience. I'm sure these guys in our changing room, they are the future of Manchester United and they will improve."

The win set up a mouthwatering semi-final against Manchester rivals Man City, who overcame Oxford.

And Matic believes United got plenty out of the Colchester tie ahead of a hectic period of fixtures over the festive season.

"We are happy to be in the semi-finals, of course," he added.

"We knew that they would defend well, they'd give their best and I think that we played well for most of the game, especially in the first half we had complete control, we played in their box and created a few chances to score.

"We didn't do that as much in the second half, but we scored three great goals.

"If we scored early in the first half, I think the game would've been different, but they defended well with 11 players behind the ball. It was hard and we knew it would be hard but when we got the first goal, the game was more open and there was more space for us to play through the lines."
