Nemanja Matic makes Manchester United captaincy admission

Nemanja Matic says he is hoping to captain Manchester United again after leading them to victory in the Europa League on Thursday night.

United kick-started their European campaign at Old Trafford as they secured a gritty one-nil victory over Kazakhstan champions Astana.

Matic and Marcus Rashford were the only two players to keep their place in the starting line up following the weekend win over Leicester as Solskjaer made plenty of changes.

United named a young side for the match and as such the duties of captaining the team lay with the experienced Serbian central midfielder in the absence of David de Gea and Ashley Young.

Speaking after the win, Matic revealed his pride at captaining the club and declared his desire to wear the armband again this season.

"It is great to be the captain," Matic told MUTV.

"To be the captain of Manchester United is something special, and there is a lot of responsibility.

"I am very, very proud because of that and I hope that it is not the last time.

"It is a big responsibility and I am proud of that.

"There were a lot of young guys in the squad, I think after Sergio Romero I was the oldest in the team.

"It is strange for me, but this is the life."
