Nemanja Matic has important new Manchester United role

Nemanja Matic acknowledges he has an important new role to play at Manchester United following the departure of Ander Herrera in the summer transfer window.

The Basque midfielder left the club at the end of last season to join French champions Paris Saint-Germain, leaving Matic as one of a few senior players in the squad.

United have added two young players to their squad this summer in Daniel James and Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who join an already youthful squad which contains a quartet of academy players.

Matic knows he can be a positive influence on the young contingent in the United group, and he hopes he can help going them to trophies under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer during the upcoming camapign.

"Yeah my position is very important to talk to the teammates especially me as one of the more experienced players and I’m trying to do that exactly," Matic said.

"I think this pre-season we are training very well, everyone of us is trying to give something extra and me also so I'm sure this season we will play much better, if that is going to be enough to win some trophies I don't know, it’s difficult to say now, but I'm quite sure we'll play much better."

United are currently enduring a trophyless spell which has seen them endure two campaigns without lifting silverware, but Matic believes he is feeling positive ahead of the new season and can help the side return to winning ways.

He added: "Last season I had some problems with injuries but I was not happy with my form, we finished sixth and I was not happy but this season I start with the team and we will see. At the moment I feel great and will continue to train hard to help the team."
