Nelson Piquet Jr axed from Formula E after horrendous season with Jaguar

Nelson Piquet Jr has been axed from Formula E.

Piquet, the son of the three-time F1 champion, was the first-ever Formula E champion when he won the title in 2015.

But he has had a horrendous season, picking up just one point, and Jaguar have decided to make a change.

Alex Lynn, 25, takes his place and becomes the sixth Brit on the grid, joining Sam Bird, Oliver Rowland, Alexander Sims, Oliver Turvey and Gary Paffett.

Piquet Jr said: “I have enjoyed working with Panasonic Jaguar Racing over the past season and a half but results in season five have not met the collective expectations of myself and the team.

"I begin my Stock Car Brazil season in a week and a half and that will be my focus in 2019.

"I am still very passionate about Formula E having been involved since the start and winning the inaugural championship."

Piquet Jr is one of the highest-earning drivers on the Formula E grid but has been significantly outscored by his Jaguar teammate Mitch Evans.

He has failed to finish eight of his last 13 E-Prixs and last stepped on the podium in his title-winning season in 2015.

Jaguar team director James Barclay said: “Following discussions after Sanya, Nelson and ourselves have reflected on the position of the team.

"Regrettably, it has been agreed that he will leave Panasonic Jaguar Racing and take up other opportunities he has been offered."

He added: "Recent results have not met his or the team’s expectations."
