Beaches from Nelson Bay marina to Fly Point will remain closed again on Wednesday after a sewage leak contaminated the harbour.
It will be the third consecutive day the beaches have been shut as Port Stephens Council awaits water quality test results to determine when it will be safe to reopen the beaches.
The community is strongly advised to avoid swimming in the area.
The closure comes after a sewage main in the marina car park was damaged during excavation works on Monday morning and began leaking into the harbour.
Up to 225 kilolitres of sewage was estimated to have leaked from the main.
Port Stephens Council said the leak was now contained within the harbour and Hunter Water had repaired the sewage main.
The NSW EPA, NSW Ministry of Health, SafeWork NSW and Fire & Rescue NSW were notified of the incident.
The beaches from Nelson Bay marina to Fly Point, including the marina and SPLASH Waterpark will be closed for swimming, with a further update from council expected on the situation today.
