You can trace Neil Young’s pre-occupation with the environment right back to his earliest recordings, and several decades on that’s something that hasn’t changed.
The Monsanto Years comes billed as an “ecologically-focused album” and is a collaboration with LA rock band Promise of the Real. “It’s a new day for the planet,” sings Young on the opening track. “It’s a new day for the sun, to shine down on what we’re doing.”
Elsewhere, he pulls few political punches with tracks such as A Rock Star Bucks a Coffee Shop (“Farmers won’t be free to grow what they wanna grow/If corporate control takes over the American farm”) and Workin’ Man, which adds banjo and harmonica to the album’s hearty rock flavour.
