Neil Warnock says Cardiff 'might play the reserves' against Manchester City - Liverpool fans take the bait

Cardiff boss Neil Warnock has said he might 'play the reserves' when Cardiff travel to Manchester City this week - and Liverpool fans are failing to see the funny side.

Warnock made his comments after the Welsh side's defeat to Chelsea over the weekend.

He said that the London side had 'got away with murder' and criticised the match officials after a number of decision went against Cardiff, who lost 2-1.

Then he got onto the subject of Cardiff's next fixture - against Manchester City at the Etihad on Wednesday - and went into full wind-up mode.

First of all he said: "I think we can keep the score down at Man City, I think we can keep it to single figures.

"But I might play the reserves down there, it’ll be interesting to see what the journalists think of that."

Then he added: "We keep getting knock-backs, I will probably play the U23s on Wednesday against Manchester City and try to keep it down to 10 or 11. It doesn't matter who you play at the minute, it is who has a flag in his hand and who has a whistle."

As the Liverpool Echo puts it: "Cardiff are fighting for their lives after a controversial defeat to Chelsea and an angry Warnock admitted during two separate interviews that the priority could be to ensure the defending champions don't wrack up the goals at the Etihad on Wednesday night."

Snigger.

Anyway, some Liverpool fans thought it was funny.

Locked up in March: Some of the criminals put behind bars in Greater Manchester last month

Commenting on the Echo's Liverpool FC Facebook page, Jorn Nielsen said: "It's not the last day of the season. It's the first day of April."

And Kevin Nde points out: "They were screwed by the refs.. It was like a very bad pre April Fools joke. The overall standard of linesmanship has gone down the toilet."

But other fans, not so amused.

Gary Slater says: "He hates liverpool so I definitely dont expect any favours from him."

Stephen Sherry says: "Disrespecting the youth players what a manager!!"

Man City and Liverpool FC difference identified by Premier League star - after playing both

And Dave Sproston perpetuates this theory: "Just another team that rolls over against Man City. They can't beat them so they don't waste the energy."

Simon John Whelan calls for action: "The FA should look into that."

But, as Jonathan Whitehouse points out: "Why bother? Man City will beat whatever is put in front of them. Warnock just wants a reaction."

Imagine that.
