Neil Warnock named Middlesbrough manager after Jonathan Woodgate sacked amid relegation battle

Middlesbrough have sacked manager Jonathan Woodgate and appointed former QPR and Crystal Palace boss Neil Warnock.

The 71-year-old, who has been out of work since leaving Cardiff City last year, will be charged with keeping the club in the Championship over the final eight games of the season.

The Teeside outfit currently sit 21st, outside the relegation zone only on goal difference, and were beaten 3-0 at home to Swansea on their return to action following the coronavirus shutdown last weekend.

Boro have won just one of their last 12 league games, a dismal run that included defeats to fellow relegation-strugglers Luton Town and Barnsley.

Warnock’s first assignment will be a trip to Stoke City, who are just two points ahead in 18th, on Saturday, before they host 22nd-placed Hull City.

Warnock holds the record for the most promotions in English football history with eight, most recently in taking Cardiff into the Premier League in 2008.

Boro were last relegated from the top flight in 2017, and lost in the playoff semi-final during the following season before missing out on the top-six by a point last year.

However, their form this season has been miserable since former England defender Woodgate replaced Tony Pulis as manager last summer.
