Neil Warnock appointed Middlesbrough manager as Jonathan Woodgate sacked following Swansea City humiliation

Neil Warnock has been appointed as Middlesbrough manager following the sacking of Jonathan Woodgate.

The Yorkshireman has been out of work since leaving Cardiff City in November following three years in the Welsh capital.

On Tuesday morning, it was confirmed that Boro had parted company with Woodgate following their 3-0 loss to Swansea City at the Riverside Stadium.

And Boro have confirmed that Warnock will now take charge of the club.

It means Warnock will face the Bluebirds in the penultimate game of the season on July 18 - a match which could prove crucial for their promotion hopes.

A club statement read: ""MFC can confirm head coach Jonathan Woodgate has been relieved of his duties with immediate effect.

"Jonathan was relieved of his role on Tuesday morning and will be replaced by the experienced Neil Warnock.

"Warnock will assume responsibility immediately. The club would like to place on record its thanks to Jonathan for all his work in the role of head coach."

Cardiff were 23rd in the Championship when Warnock took charge in October 2016.

He led them to a 12th place finish before guiding the Bluebirds into the Premier League following a stunning first full campaign at the club.
