Neil Redfearn's verdict after Newcastle U23s secure bragging rights with Wear-Tyne derby victory

Newcastle United coach Neil Redfearn has spoken of his pride after leading the Magpies to a derby win against Sunderland .

The 2-0 victory in Eppleton secured bragging rights for the Toon youngsters in Premier League 2.

Speaking after the game Redfearn said: “I thought it was a good performance.

“Sunderland did well but the sending off makes a difference.

“Although we deserved to be in front.

“We were wasteful in front of goal overall after creating some good openings, we could have added more to the scoreline if we are honest.

“But I said to the boys the most pleasing thing was the clean sheet as you can build a lot of things around them.

“We have made them aware of that in recent weeks and they did well tonight on that.”

United’s goals came from Luke Charman and Victor Fernandez with Redfearn commenting: “Victor was a real handful and it was fitting he got the penalty and then the goal.

“Luke’s penalty was a good one as he waited so long for it because of the ref.

“He kept his composure and struck it well.”
