Rush's pioneering progressive rock drummer Neil Peart has died aged 67, his family has confirmed.

The renowned percussionist, who also wrote lyrics for the trio, died on Tuesday in California following a battle with brain cancer, his bandmates said.

Peart joined the Canadian rock group in 1974 and the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 2013

He earned multiple accolades in his career, including being inducted into the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame in 1983 and was also selected as their annual "best rock drummer" nine times.

He also made an Officer of the Order of Canada along with his bandmates, Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson.

In a statement, the band said: "It is with broken hearts and the deepest sadness that we must share the terrible news that on Tuesday our friend, soul brother and band mate of 45 years, Neil, has lost his incredibly brave three and a half year battle with brain cancer.

"Those wishing to express their condolences can choose a chancer research group or charity of their choice and make a donation in Neil's name. Rest in peace brother."

Rush completed their last tour in 2015, with Peart then deciding he wanted to spend more time with his family.

During his time with the group they recorded hits including The Spirit Of Radio and Tom Sawyer.

Kiss bassist Gene Simmons tweeted: "My prayers and condolences to the Peart Family, Fans and Friends. Neil was a kind soul."

Tenacious D star Jack Black said: "The master will be missed."
