Neil Parish: Everything we know about MP accused of watching porn - from wife to career

Tory Neil Parish has been named as the MP accused by two female colleagues of watching porn in the House of Commons.

Parish, 65, reported himself to the Standards Committee of the House of Commons and has been suspended pending an investigation.

Earlier he broke his silence on the scandal when he promised to co-operate fully but refused to step down as an MP.

He said: "Following recent allegations regarding an MP’s use of their mobile phone in Parliament, I have referred myself to the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards in the House of Commons."

The grandfather of two is married to Sue, who is employed as his junior secretary, and described the allegations against her husband as "very embarrassing."

The MP left school at 16 and worked on his family's farm and has two children with his wife.

He was first elected as representative for the Tiverton and Honiton constituency in 2010, and was successfully re-elected in 2015 and 2017 where he has a commanding 24,239 majority.

The Environment Committee chairman was a farmer in Somerset where he still calls home and was previously a Member of the European Parliament for the south west of England.

His website says of his record: “Before that time, he was a local councillor.

“Throughout his time in politics, at all levels, Neil’s focus has always been standing up for residents and being a strong voice for the countryside.

“Neil also takes a very keen interest in animal welfare and launched a select committee inquiry into the treatment of domestic pets, including cats, dogs and horses.

“The EFRA Committee has also submitted a report to Government on the treatment of greyhounds in the racing industry.

Earlier in his political career he was banned from entering Zimbabwe, which continues today (Facebook)

“Neil’s other interests include the politics of Africa. During the 2000 Presidential elections in Zimbabwe, he acted as an election monitor and criticised the conduct of Robert Mugabe’s regime. In 2008, Neil called on the British Government to reject the legitimacy of the ZANU-PF government and to recognise Morgan Tsvangirai’s MDC party as the democratically-elected Government of Zimbabwe.

“Following this, Robert Mugabe banned Neil from re-entering the country. The ban remains in place to this day.”

He previously voted against allowing same sex couples to marry and against allowing court to deal with divorces for same sex couple.

The website, 'They Work For You', shows he generally voted against LGBT rights and against laws to promote equality and human rights.

On foreign policy and defence he always voted against UK membership of the EU and against a right to remain for EU nationals already living in the UK.

On taxes he almost always voted for increasing the rate of VAT and almost always voted for higher taxes on alcoholic drinks.

He has also previously voted for mass surveillance of people's communications and activities and against more powers to the Scottish and Welsh Parliaments.

Earlier this week Parish was asked about the then-unnamed MP in a TV interview and insisted the whips would do "a thorough investigation".

He told GB News : “I think the Whips’ Office will do a thorough investigation and we will wait and see that result.

“I think from that, then the decision will have to be made what action will be taken.”

Earlier this week he discussed the probe into who the MP was on GB News (GB News)

Asked if there was a problem in Parliament’s culture, Mr Parish replied it was a “very intense area” and “you are going to get people who step over the line”.

He added: “I don’t think there’s necessarily a huge culture thing but I do think it has to be dealt with and dealt with seriously, and I think that’s what the whips will do in our Whips’ Office.”
