Neil McCann reveals 'crystal clear' Inverness job talks and the John Robertson phone call that sealed deal

Neil McCann has made it clear he has no interest in taking the Inverness job on a permanent basis.

The former Dundee boss has agreed to take the reins at the Caledonian Stadium until John Robertson is ready to return from compassionate leave.

McCann, who will take the team against Hearts tomorrow night, answered an SOS from chief executive Scott Gardiner and on a recommendation from Robertson to fill the job in the short-term.

He said: “I’ve known Scott a while now, he was very honest and very frank in terms of the situation I was coming into.

“Personal stuff, that’s between him and John.

“He was very up front about anything and it’s nice to know you have been approached for this type of position.

“I am pretty certain this would have been a really attractive position for a lot of people so I’m really proud of the fact Scott has come to me.

“John wanted me and the club sanctioned it.

“The conversations between Scott and John were crucial to me because I want to make it crystal clear that I am not in here in any way, shape or form to take John’s job.”

McCann also revealed that he spoke to Robertson, his former Hearts team mate, and got his blessing and full backing before he agreed to move to Inverness.

He stated: “Sometimes in football you meet friends and team-mates, and you can sometimes separate and not talk to each other for a wee bit.

“We did something really special in 1998 in my time at Hearts, and those bonds tend to last a long time.

“I spent a long time on the phone with John, and as everyone knows he can talk.

“It was great to hear him. I got an idea on the side and the setup here, and I know they are really good people at this club.

“He was really encouraging to myself in terms of wanting me to come in and help.

McCann doesn’t know if the job will be weeks or months but his aim is to get Inverness away from the drop zone.

The new interim boss, who will work with Barry Robson and Ryan Esson, stated: “Even if it went really well, I am in here until John feels ready to come back - whether that’s weeks or towards the end of the season.

“He knows I am going to give everything for him while I’m here and when he’s ready to come back hopefully the team is in a good position.”

Inverness had to look outside as No. 2 Scott Kellacher has also been floored by a virus and won’t be back at the Caledonian Stadium this season.
