Neil McCann named Inverness interim boss while John Robertson steps away on compassionate leave

Former Dundee manager Neil McCann will replace John Robertson as Inverness boss on a temporary basis.

The Caley Thistle boss has stepped away from his role with the Championship side after being granted a personal leave of absence.

McCann has worked as a pundit since he left Dundee for a second time in 2018 and has spoken about his desire to return to the dugout.

Many observers of his side in the City of Discovery noted his team often performed well but failed to get results during his time in charge.

A brief statement read on the club's website read: "The club is pleased to announce that Neil McCann will take the position of manager of ICTFC while John Robertson is on his compassionate leave."

Inverness currently sit sixth in the Championship but have games on hand on the teams above them as they eye a playoff spot and a return to the Premiership.

Robertson was granted leave after a family bereavement and he missed their 2-2 draw with Alloa on Tuesday night.

He will also be absent from the dugout for their upcoming match with Hearts, who they face on Friday.

ICT chairman Scot Gardiner has said the club have been 'overwhelmed' with messages of support for the manager.

He told BBC Sport: “We've had messages from many people who know John but a lot more from people that don’t.

"From club chairmen in the Championship and beyond. It’s been pretty overwhelming.

“I spoke to John’s wife this morning and spoke to John this afternoon and he’s completely aware of it and very thankful.

"It shows when it really matters everyone can behave appropriately and they’ve gone above and beyond, everyone who has contacted us and it's much appreciated.

“The right thing is the right thing, no matter what and the various boards of Inverness over the years have had a reputation for doing the right thing and it’s no different now."
