Neil McCann in Derek McInnes Aberdeen 'marriage end' prediction as pundit launches defence of Dons manager's record

Pundit Neil McCann has launched a strong defence of Derek McInnes ' work at Aberdeen - but admits it could be end of the "marriage" this summer.

The Dons have won just once since the turn of the year and fell to a 2-0 defeat to Hibs in a major blow to their Europa League ambitions.

A number of fans have expressed their frustration over both results and performances, with some calling for chairman Dave Cormack to make a change in the dugout.

However, he insists his ex-Rangers teammate has done a brilliant job at Pittodrie while having top players like Sam Cosgove and Scott Wright leave midway through the campaign.

With pressure mounting in the Granite City, he believes McInnes should be given until the end of the season before a decision is made.

McCann told BBC Sportsound: “I don’t agree that it’s time to change the manager.

"I think Derek might have a conversation come the end of the season and evaluate everything. Eight years he has been up there and he’s been terrific.

“There is a couple of things that have happened. He’s had horrible injuries which we’ll say, but I think in terms of the boys he’s sold on and the finances he’s generated for the club it’s been fantastic.

“You think about Cosgrove and McKenna, and he’s moved a couple of bodies on, but I was surprised Scott Wright left.

"I felt that it would happen, because Rangers were in a good position because they had allowed [Ross] McCrorie to go up there, but when I signed the pre-contract I felt it would happen because of ill-feeling between the supporters that goes way back, but I was surprised he was allowed to leave with Main and Cosgrove going out the door.

"For me, they didn’t have a great deal of speed and attacking threat. I know they have Jonny Hayes and (Matty) Kennedy but I thought Wright was looking really lively. I think he will be a star for Rangers, and I would have held on to him.

"And whether Derek would have wanted to hold of him, I’m sure he would have, but maybe that’s a decision that was taken from because of the finances.

“He’s done a really good job, but maybe the marriage will come an end at the end of the season but he shouldn’t be removed for the position just now, absolutely not.”
