Neil McCann in Alfredo Morelos Rangers TV claim as pundit reckons striker doesn't 'start games right'

Former Rangers star Neil McCann has heralded Alfredo Morelos as a "fantastic player" but also believes the Colombian falls short in several areas compared to Ibrox legends of yesteryear.

The former Dundee boss admits he's a fan of the Colombian striker but doesn't believe the 24-year-old is always at the races when games get underway.

And McCann has also claimed Morelos lacks the ability to "go cold" in the box when bearing down on the goalkeeper.

But the 46-year-old can see why Steven Gerrard keeps the faith in the maverick Colombian despite a host of flashpoints during his action-packed four years in Scottish football.

Speaking on Rangers TV before the game with Dundee United, McCann said: "I think he's fast becoming a player who I wouldn't say is impossible to coach, but he's very close to it.

"He's the type of boy with this petulant streak in him but he's involved in all four goals there (against Antwerp).

"I thought he started very poorly again. I don't think he starts games right.

"He never looks as if he's switched on immediately at the start of games, but then he absolutely came into his own in that match and he was so instrumental in Rangers getting back into the game then winning the game.

"I actually don't think he's a natural striker in terms of his finishing ability, but he's clinical in terms of balls bouncing close where he doesn't need to think and can just smash things.

"So he's a proper old fashioned goalscorer in my mind.

"Is he an Ally McCoist type finisher? Would I even go across the city and say he's an Edouard finisher? He's not.

"He doesn't go cold in the box. Rod Wallace is in my all-time team, because Rod would just go cold at times - he would score instinctive goals, he would see, open his body up and just cool right down.

"Alfredo Morelos looks as if he rushes things, but when he's on it he's a fantastic player to have in the side."
