Neil McCann gives Motherwell penalty claim verdict as Ojo handball “save Joe Lewis would be proud of”

Neil McCann reckons Motherwell were denied a stonewall penalty in their defeat to Aberdeen - insisting Funso Ojo's handball was a stop Dons keeper Joe Lewis would have been proud of.

The Steelmen - who finished the game with 10-men after Liam Polworth's controversial red card - lost 2-0 at Pittodrie, but were furious when Ojo's handball in the box, which blocked Sherwin Seedorf's goalbound effort in the first half, was missed by referee Craig Napier.

And speaking on last night's Sportscene, former Rangers winger McCann said it was such a clear handball, Dons No.1 Lewis would have been delighted with the 'save' from Ojo.

McCann said: "This, for me, is as clear as it comes.

Motherwell's Sherwin Seedorf (L) had an effort blocked by the hand of Aberdeen's Funso Ojo (SNS Group)

“He’s flying into that.

“Unless the referee’s view is obscured by Lewis Ferguson...but there’s no doubt.

“He’s holding it, for seconds, but the first one...Joe Lewis would have been proud of that.

“They got out of jail in terms of that decision."

Colleague Leanne Crichton, the former Scotland women's international, agreed and criticised whistler Napier.

She added: "It’s an unnatural position.

“That’s the term we use now with the laws of the game and I don’t know if the referee has missed it.

“His positioning could have been more central as play is developing

“There is a lot of bodies arriving there and if he’d kept himself central, he’d have had a better look at it.

"It’s difficult even for his assistant referee to see it from there."
